Directional drilling technology

BC Gas Inc. has been the first to use directional drilling technology to successfully install 2,720 m. of 219 mm. steel gas pipe under a heavily paved, four-lane highway in Richmond, B.C. The technique was used as a replacement to the open-cut method normally implemented in road crossings. In addition to enhanced public relations and greater focus on environmental safety, the undertaking produced significant cost savings amounting to as much as $350,000.

Gas main installed under a major four-lane highway.

BC Gas Utility Ltd. and its contractor successfully used modern directional drilling technology to install 8,920 ft (2,720 m) of 8-in. (219 mm) steel gas pipe down the centerline of a busy four-lane connector in Richmond, B.C.

As in many cities in Canada and the U.S., older areas in Richmond are being redeveloped and rebuilt. High-rises, four-plexes and townhouses are replacing single-family residential dwellings. When this happens, gas flows increase and pressures decline proportionately.
