The emergence of contract line locating has greatly simplified the task of determining the exact location of underground lines of utilities. Previously, an excavator had to deal with technicians from the various utilities. The primary benefit of contract line locating is that one has to deal with only one technician. Also, accuracy is enhanced and the contractor has only to consult with one technician when a problem occurs. However, there are disadvantages such as when there are poor customer plant records and when there are congested easements.

Contract locating provides an extra layer of safety.

The need to locate underground utilities before excavating has always been there. The repercussions of not doing so are evidenced every time an accident occurs involving an overanxious or perhaps unaware contractor who dug into the ground and damaged a utility line. Danger is prevalent in these situations. People have been injured and in some cases, killed.
