Gas distribution outlook: new customers & maintenance remain a top priority.

The U.S. consumed 21.5 Tcf of natural gas in 2003, according to a recent study prepared by Energy and Environmental Analysis Inc. for the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) Foundation. Additionally, the study projects natural gas consumption will grow to 29.7 Tcf by 2020, an increase of 38% or 1.9% per year.

The nation's growing demand for natural gas is putting pressure on the gas distribution sector to make large capital commitments to construct major infrastructure projects and maintain existing pipeline capacity.

According to the National Petroleum Council, natural gas distribution utilities must construct 255,000 miles of new lines by 2015 to bring natural gas to consumers, expanding the current system by about 25%. Moreover, utilities must sustain a spending level of about $5...
